Artist's Description

The “Reflections” series of paintings captures the essence of the Children’s March of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. I believe that every event in our history has meaning. The children marched in a campaign to end segregation, but where stopped by water hoses and dogs to deter their peaceful demonstration. My interpretation is that these children went through this process so that we might enjoy our freedoms today. The three paintings in the “Reflections” series depict the process of sacrifice. The second painting is called “Weathering the Storm.” The young girl is holding the boy and they are turning away from the water. They stand for the courage to work through rejection, turmoil, and disappointment in our lives. This painting could have instead been named Perseverance.
