Artist's Description

The “Reflections” series of paintings captures the essence of the Children’s March of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. I believe that every event in our history has meaning. The children marched in a campaign to end segregation, but where stopped by water hoses and dogs to deter their peaceful demonstration. My interpretation is that these children went through this process so that we might enjoy our freedoms today. The three paintings in the “Reflections” series depict the process of sacrifice. The third painting is called “Shield of Faith”. This one whispers to me saying: No matter what happens, be faithful and believe in yourself. As we continue to come together as a people, we must appreciate the pain endured by those who came before us. These paintings help us to reflect on a dreadful experience that is producing a positive outcome today.
