Description
The “Let Freedom Ring” quilt is a modern interpretation of the slaves’ travel to freedom. Along the trails to freedom, women came together to make quilts for domestic purposes and to keep their families warm. This quilt tells a fictional story of the mountains, valleys, hills, forests and waterways traveled during the mid to late 1800 during Harriet Tubman’s crusade. This quilt is meant to portray a positive experience with nature that kept women strong, inspired and moving ahead.
The stitched photographs on fabric represent (starting at the top from left to right) different states in United States including New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California, and Stone Mountain, Georgia, where I live. During the Suffrage Movement black women found the strength in our country to unit for their right to vote during and after reconstruction.
The stitched photographs are called thread art and are incased with leather straps to represent bondage. The leather straps hang unbuckled at the bottom of the quilt to represent breaking the bondage. The leather lattice work in the quilt represents the women and their families traveling through the wilderness and being met with adversity from one state to another. The metallic stitching behind the lattice work represents femininity. The stitched bell in the center of the quilt is called “The Freedom Bell” representing freedom. This photo by Tracie L Hawkins was printed on nine pieces of fabric, sewn together using thread art to embellish the bell to give the quilted photo a 3D effect.
